More Detailed Climate & Weather-Related Information

Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC)

The Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) is a leading source of information regarding climate change in the Columbia Basin and British Columbia.  It has prepared several reports and tools that are relevant to climate resilience planning in the Basin:

PCIC's Plan2Adapt is a handy tool for obtaining data on future climate projections for the region,

  • Climate Extremes in the Canadian Columbia Basin: A Preliminary Assessment (2013) - This report details projected climate extremes and changes to the return periods of extreme events in the Canadian Columbia Basin.
  • Canadian Columbia Basin - Climate Projections and Trends: 2007-2010 Update - This provides additional information that was not available for PCIC's 2006 Basin study. It draws heavily on a subsequent province-wide analysis and on climate model projections prepared for the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
  • PCIC Climate Change Analysis - Columbia Basin 2006 - This is an in-depth study of climate change in the Columbia Basin that has served as the main source of data for the Communities Adapting to Climate Change Initiative (CACCI).
  • Plan2Adapt is a useful tool that generates maps, plots and data describing projected future climate conditions for British Columbia by regional district. In addition to viewing information online, you can download the data for further analysis, reporting and presentation.
  • PCIC's Data Portal makes weather observations from over 6,000 stations available to the public. This data and its ease of access make the portal useful to researchers, engineers, industry representatives and anyone with a keen interest in the climate of the province or historical weather. The portal provides access to temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed and other observational data collected from 1872 to the present.

  • Emergency Info BC  issues weather and hazard-related alerts and bulletins in real-time for all regions in BC.
  • BC Environment's River Forecast Centre offers four useful information products: 1) Snow Survey and Water Supply bulletins, which are published eight times a year, 2) a biweekly commentary on snow pillow conditions based on readings from the Automated Snow Pillows from January to June, 3) spring freshet information, and 4) Streamflow and Water Supply bulletin from July to October.
  • Kootenay Resilience is the digital hub for a project that assessed the vulnerability and resilience of forest ecosystems in the West Kootenay in 2010-2011.  The overall project goal was to develop knowledge to improve the likelihood of maintaining the values currently provided by forests - from timber supply to clean water and wildlife habitat.

The CBT website also offers useful climate change resources.
